Green Represents Healing

Today I'd like to share an excerpt from a section of Dreaming in Colors, A Spiritual Memoir. This is taken from the introduction to the section "Green - Healing".

The healers or shamans of prehistoric gathering societies wandered the forests, filling their medicine bags with green leaves from a myriad or plants and trees. Narrow and pale, broad and bold, fingered and jagged-edged, each leaf was coveted for its specific healing property. The varied greens of a forest landscape, a meadow or a backyard garden offer us healing when we spend restorative time with them. From renewal and healing come growth and transformation.

The [prose and poems] in...this section tell of healing - not only physical healing, but also the healing and growth of mind and spirit. These components - mind, body and spirit - are completely intertwined, with each having a strong impact on the others.

Excerpts from the Introduction of Dreaming in Colors, A Spiritual Memoir:

It all began with a dream and a cup of coffee. I must tell you I haven’t always shared my morning coffee with God, at least not consciously. And I haven’t always paid attention to my dreams. During my middle years, I felt that I spent about a decade in a dark tunnel. I was out, functioning in the world, being a wife and mother, establishing a soup kitchen, teaching cooking classes, tutoring students with special needs. But I was experiencing physical pain and injuries that led to major surgeries and I was often short-tempered, lashing out at those dearest to me. I hated looking in the mirror and seeing an anguished face etched with pain, but I didn’t know what to do to change things.
.........................................................................................................................................................................
I also hope that the universal themes in my writing – fear, gratitude, confusion, grace, joy – will speak to your heart and that you will recognize yourself in one or more of the vignettes. Although our experiences are different – not all of us have lost a baby or a parent, for example – we’ve all known the grief of losing someone or something we hold dear. It could be a friend or relative, a job, our youth or our health. In that place of darkness, we all connect, as we do in the welcome sunlight of a spring morning. I pray that you will find within this book the comfort and blessing of shared experience, of love and community.
